In a remarkable demonstration of ongoing improvement, SpaceX's Falcon 9, with a rich history of over 300 flights spanning 13 years, showcases enhanced performance. The latest achievement involves the successful launch of 24 Starlink v2 mini satellites, surpassing the previous record of 23. The Starlink v2 mini, introduced at the beginning of last year, already boasted approximately four times more capacity than its predecessors. This mission represents an expansion from the usual 21-23 satellites per flight. Elon Musk confirms the advancements, stating that, due to continued design improvements, Falcon 9 carried its highest-ever payload of 17.5 tons to a useful orbit. The booster used in this historic flight has an impressive track record, having been flown 12 times previously.
Various factors, including potential reductions in satellite weight, may have contributed to accommodating an extra Starlink satellite. With a total weight of 17.5 metric tons for 24 v2 mini Starlinks, the implied average weight per satellite seems to be around 730 kg, potentially lower than the 800 kg specified in SpaceX's 2022 FCC filing.
SpaceX sets ambitious goals, aiming to reach 28 Starlinks by the end of the year. This strategic move underlines SpaceX's commitment to rapid and cost-effective expansion of its satellite internet constellation. In 2023, SpaceX prioritized Starlink-dedicated Falcon 9 missions, launching 63 compared to 28 customer F9 flights. Looking ahead, with the impending operationalization of Starship, SpaceX envisions launching larger and higher-capacity Starlink satellites.
